Yeah, COBOL is a bit old school. Used alot in the industry though, but I know no one who codes in it for fun. If they did, they would be pretty sad and single. :)

VB.NET is used alot in the industry, same with JAVA (In the way of dealing with SQL databases).
Commerical software is mostly written in C++. I have never used C++ with SQL though.

Gnu Compiler Collection. It's a collection of compilers by Gnu (a free software foundation). It has compilers for C++, C, Fortran, ADA to name a few.
