Yeah, COBOL is a bit old school. Used alot in the industry though, but I know no one who codes in it for fun. If they did, they would be pretty sad and single. :)

VB.NET is used alot in the industry, same with JAVA (In the way of dealing with SQL databases).
Commerical software is mostly written in C++. I have never used C++ with SQL though.

If the table has a primary key, you can search for a match that way instead of a large Select statement. But it depends on what your are doing.
