well as far as my knowledge goes there was those 2 classes in DirectX 9 "Caps","Manager" that are used to check the hardware capabilities of the PC using C# or C++.

you can read "SAMS Teach Yourself Programming with Java™ in 24 Hours, FOURTH EDITION" it's not the greatest book but it will teach you the very basic things about the language
